The Global Affairs Program at George Mason University is searching for an instructor to teach GLOA 305: College-to-Career in Fall 2022. This is a one credit course that meets online on Tuesday, 7:20-9:10pm. The fall semester runs August 22 to December 14, 2022. GLOA 305 focuses on career choices and effective self-presentation for soon-to-be graduating students with an undergraduate major in Global Affairs. It explores how the skills and knowledge gained through the humanities and social sciences in particular can be leveraged for a successful transition to post-graduation employment or graduate school. The course is to balance teaching students practical skills that may include interfacing with Career Services (e.g., resume building, interviewing) with offering students opportunities to explore professional fields through networking and research (e.g., informational interviews, guest speakers, networking events in the class). We hope that the instructor will be able to take a lead in providing these opportunities for professionalization to the students enrolled. Global Affairs alumni work in a wide variety of positions in the D.C. region and outside of it (e.g., government, industry, non-profits, think tanks, consulting, academia) and several have secured external grants and fellowships. St. Mary’s College of Maryland is recruiting a Public Humanities Fellow to build on national attention for the College’s recently dedicated Commemorative to Enslaved Peoples of Southern Maryland by leading a one-year grant-funded project. By supporting existing humanities programming and participating in community engagement work with invested people and projects in the campus and local community, the Public Humanities Fellow will take responsibility for two central objectives: 1) creating a long-term plan for activities and public outreach related to this monument for use by the College; and 2) completing scholarly research in the humanities related to the Fellow’s expertise that bears directly on the experiences of the enslaved in the historical and contemporary American landscape. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in any field of the humanities specializing in histories of enslavement, antiracism and social justice, and/or monuments and memory and a commitment to public humanities in museums and heritage work, galleries, libraries, and archives, or other cultural and service organizations. The successful candidate should expect a November 2021 start date with compensation set at $60,000 with health care benefits.

St. Mary's College of Maryland Anthropology department announces a search for a one-year visiting assistant professor of anthropology position for academic year 2021-22.

Hi WAPA  Members and Friends.

I'd like to introduce you to The AAA Task Force  on Anthropology in Practice Settings (TF) , established by the 2019 AAA Executive Board. The Task Force has a three-year term, from 2020-2022. We are in our second year. I'm writing this to let you know what the TF is all about and also to seek your input.

The TF's charge is “to recommend ways in which the Association can increase engagement on the part of anthropologists working in business, government, and non-profit settings”  (quote from formal charge statement.)

In summary we are to develop and pilot ways that the AAA can be more useful, relevant, and welcoming to practitioners as well as to recommend changes to current practices. We're especially concerned with those whose primary employment is outside the academy.  We're acting to better engage practitioner members with the AAA and those who are not members.

We will work to educate non-academic organizations to understand anthropological practice, and to strengthen the job market for practitioners. This is clearly a busy, hard-working group.

I'll be happy to talk with you about the TF and answer any questions.  I also hope you'll give me your thoughts about the AAA, that is, what we're doing right and what the Association could do better.  I'm also interested in hearing why you are or are not a AAA member and what relationship you think WAPA should have with the AAA.
